SMITHS STATION, Al. (WRBL)- Lee County Special Olympics held their 50th annual track and field meet at Smiths Station high school.
The ages of the athletes ranged from eight to sixty years old. They participated in an array of events from shot put and javelin, to walks, runs and relay races.
Tim Hudson was the special guest at the opening ceremonies. Hudson helped light the olympic torch to launch the games and gave words of encouragement to the athletes.
Hudson said, ” you know, just being a part of it and see the happiness and the smiles you can out on their faces and their families’ faces is something that makes all the work, it makes it worth it and there is a satisfaction that comes along with that, that is just hard to explain.”
Lee County Special Olympics Director, Elizabeth Kaufman, said the athletes have been training for these events all year and nothing compares to seeing them be successful.
The state Special Olympics will be held from May 17th to the 19th at Troy University.
