Local fraternity empowers youth to become men

It’s a brotherhood that’s uplifting young boys here at East Columbus Magnet Academy on the path to success.

“We have adopted East Columbus Academy and this has been an opportunity to speak out to male students and express to them the importance of education,” says Travis Chambers, President of Lambda Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

The Lambda Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi is stepping into action adopting the school as part of their annual achievement week program.

“One of the things we strive to do is mentorship; we are very big on that. It allows us an opportunity to sit down with the kids, talk about their career goals, their objectives, what they want to do in life and express to them the importance of an education,” says Chambers.

Topics on the agenda not only focused on students staying in school, but rather sharing life-long lessons that were missing in today’s classrooms.

“They taught me to wear a belt and look presentable because it helps you get a job, they help you in so many ways” says La’mar’kus Hall, 8th grader.

“Sergeant James said put in long hours, lose sleep to get what you want and what you can do and when you work at it, you might get it,” says Alexander Graham, 8th grader.

Omega brothers agree it’s an honor to be changing these young boys into men and will be sure to guide them in the right direction.

“We track them, making sure they are excelling academically and it’s just a great feeling, that’s what Omega Psi Phi is all about,” says Chambers.

The Lambda Iota chapter has adopted over 20 schools in the past and will continue on fulfilling the legacy.
