Macon County has lost out on a major economic project worth “billions” of dollars.
The US Air Force awarded a project to produce next-generation trainer jets to a different company. Italian firm Leonardo DRS was one of the bidders on the project and had chosen Macon County as the plant site if it won the air force contract.
The 9.2 billion dollar project would have brought 750 direct jobs as well as many associated jobs to Macon County.
Instead, the US Air Force decided to award the project to Boeing SAAB.
Joe Turnham, Macon Co. Economic Development Authority Chairmen, released a statement on being turned down for the project.
“We competed and were finalists in a national competition. Tuskegee and Moton Field carved its niche in this competition as a world ready aerospace destination. We’ve only just begun,” said Turnham.
