More than 20 dogs seized in Hogansville: woman hospitalized, grandson arrested

HOGANSVILLE, Ga (WRBL) - The Hogansville Police Department has arrested a 27-year-old man and seized more than 20 dogs from a residence in the 200 block of Church Street.

Police say they've charged 27- year-old Bobby McCoy, of Hogansville, with Elder Abuse and Animal Neglect. McCoy was transported to the Troup County Detention Center in LaGrange.

Hogansville officers say they responded to the home just before 10 a.m. Thursday after receiving a call for a welfare check from Adult Protective Services. They are the state entity charged with investigating all reports of abuse, neglect, and/or exploitation of older persons or adults with a disability.

Authorities say they spoke with the occupants and observed unsanitary conditions inside the home. Police say they immediately contacted Hogansville Code Enforcement to continue to investigate.

According to a press release from the Hogansville Police Department, they discovered was a large number of dog feces, the house looked abandoned and was in dangerous conditions, and signs of rodent infestation.

Police say an 80-year-old woman living at the home was immediately transported by ambulance to West Georgia Medical Center for evaluation.

Authorities entering the residence had to wear air tanks, respirators and other protective equipment due to the odor and unsanitary conditions. Authorities say they gave up the search for several dogs due to the unsafe conditions inside the home.

According to the press release, two of the dogs will be euthanized because of their deteriorating health.

The Hogansville Police Department investigation is ongoing at this time.
