Medal of Honor recipient and Opelika native discusses new memoir

OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) - Command Sergeant Major Bennie Adkins is releasing a new memoir taking readers inside the battle of Camp A Shau in Vietnam. Adkins' heroic actions in the battle earned him the nation's highest military honor.

News 3 was honored to be invited into Adkins home in Opelika to discuss his new book, A Tiger Among Us.

"It was a 38-hour battle and during that period 17 special forces withstood this battle, with five of them paying the ultimate price and the rest of us were all multi-wounded," Adkins remembers.

Command Sergeant Major humbly wears the Medal of Honor for the comrades who died that day and those who survived.

"I feel as though this medal was awarded not to be, but for the 16 others who were in the special forces with me that day," he said.

As a 32-year-old Green Beret, Adkins held off waves of attacking Viet Cong.  Despite grave injuries, Adkins continued to risk his life evacuating several wounded comrades. The incredible events are army legend and detailed in his memoir, A Tiger Among Us. His co-author, Katie Jackson says Adkins is a real hero.

"I learned a lot about the military, and I learned a lot about bravery. You think you have an idea of the concept, but you don't until you meet somebody like Bennie and learn about what he has done. The resilience, how smart these men were and so adaptable," she said.

Command Sergeant Major Adkins wanted the book to be as close to historical fact as possible, honest and accurate. A faithful retelling of the battle that earned him our nation's highest military honor.   Adkins, who believes in the power of education,  is using proceeds from the book to support his foundation providing scholarships for special forces who are transitioning from the military.

Adkins will soon go on a nationwide book tour, sharing his love of country, hard work, and sacrifice with others.

"The best advice I give is to try to figure out what you want to do as early as you can and then go about doing it the best way you can," Adkins said.

A Tiger Among Us: A Conversation with Bennie Adkins and Katie Lamar Jackson will be held Thursday, May 24, 2018, from 4:00 PM-5:30 PM at Pebble Hill. Event information can be found at A Tiger Among Us: A Conversation with Bennie Adkins and Katie Jackson
