ELMORE COUNTY, Ala. (WRBL) – An Opelika father is facing a Reckless Murder charge in the death of his two-year-old child who was killed in a car crash Saturday afternoon in Elmore County.
28-year-old Tierra Leonard of Opelika has been charged with Reckless Murder and Assault 1st degree in the crash that killed his little girl and caused another driver to be seriously injured. Alabama Troopers say the toddler was not in a child restraint system at the time of the deadly crash. Leonard’s bond is $60,000, he’s been booked in at the Elmore County Detention Facility.
Alabama State Troopers say the two-vehicle crash happened at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, April 13th. Troopers say Leonard was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu when it collided with a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado. The child was a passenger with her dad in the Malibu and was not secured in a child restraint system. The driver of the Silverado was also seriously injured and transported to Baptist Medical Center South. Leonard was transported from the scene for treatment of his injuries.
The crash occurred on Elmore County 73 (Flat Rock Road) near the Friendship Community, approximately five miles west of Tallassee.
Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.
