Peace Officers Memorial Day: Honoring fallen Americus Officers Nicholas Smarr and Jody Smith

 Tuesday, Sumter County held its first ever Peace Officer Memorial as part of a nationwide effort.
     The purpose of the event is to honor the lives of officers lost in the line of duty.
“Anytime we lose someone we lose a part of who we are.”- says Chief Mark Scott, Americus Police Department.
     Officers with the Americus PD, The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia Southwestern State University honored the lives of seven fallen officers including former Americus Officer Nicholas Smarr and former Georgia Southwestern State University Officer Jody Smith.
     Their mothers attended the ceremony.
 “I miss my Nick. It’s hard.”- says Janice Smarr, Nick’s mother.
 “Sometimes I wonder how I keep going but I know I do because God gives me that strength and I’m so thankful for God giving me that strength.”- says Sharron Johnson, Jody’s mother.
     Johnson  explains how it’s been getting through sentimental times, including holidays.
      Those holidays include Mother’s Day.”
      “Everyday… it doesn’t have to be – it doesn’t have to be an occasion. It doesn’t have to be a birthday. It doesn’t have to be Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving or Christmas… every day is the same…without Jody.”- says Johnson.
