PHENIX CITY, Ala. (WRBL) Phenix City police investigators have charged a mother with Capital Murder when her four-month-old baby was discovered dead after a Wednesday fire at Clover Leaf Apartments.
Investigators say Ashley Nicole King is charged with Capital Murder (Child under 14) under the Alabama Criminal Code. Probable cause was established, and King was placed in confinement with no bond pending her court date.
Investigators say on April 24, 2019 around 10:14 am, the Phenix City Police, Fire, and EMS were called to the scene of a structure fire located at Clover Leaf Apartments, 2813 Stadium Drive, Apartment 29, Phenix City, Alabama.
Captain Darryl Williams with the Phenix City Police Department says upon arrival; first responders were notified of an apartment fire and the possibility of a child being inside. Firefighters made entry into the apartment and located a four-month-old infant with severe burns and non-responsive to medical personnel.
Investigators say the infant was transported to Piedmont Hospital Emergency Room for treatment with life-threatening injuries. The infant was pronounced dead at the hospital by the on-duty medical staff. The infant’s body will be sent to the Alabama Forensics Crime Lab for an autopsy.
“Investigations into the cause of the fire were conducted, and it was determined that the fire was a deliberate act. Further investigation led police to the infant’s mother, Ashley Nicole King, as a suspect in the case,” said Captain Darryl Williams.
Williams says this is an active investigation invovling a coordinated effort with the Phenix City Fire Department, Russell County Department of Human Resources, the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s office, and the Phenix City Police Department.
