There are scam artists targeting the elderly and retirement communities.
Sergeant Wendy Thornton tells News 3 that financial crimes investigators received around a dozen calls within just a few hours Thursday afternoon. Residents reporting scammers who claim to be from the IRS.
Authorities say the callers pretend the recipient had unpaid taxes and claim CPD is on the way to arrest them if they do not issue a payment over the phone.
Sgt. Thornton reminds residents police will never arrest you for failure to pay and never give out personal or financial information over the phone.
The callers have been using phone numbers with 315 or 345 area codes, but also be aware of spoofed numbers.
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and notify CPD immediately.
