School leaders from the Turnaround office met for the first time in Atlanta Thursday.
The Turnaround Office was created to focus on state resources on improving schools that have performed poorly on the state measurements.
Five schools in Muscogee County: Baker Middle school, Rothschild Leadership Academy, Dorothy Height Elementary, Brewer Elementary and Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary are have been deemed failing by the state.
The school leaders say the most concerning issues come from outside of the classroom.
“You have students who are single-parent homes, students who are homeless, students who come to school hungry, students who need tutoring and part of this initiative is to partner with the community to close those barriers as much as possible,” Transformation Specialist Maggie Moody says.
