Sheriff Donna Tompkins announces second term run for 2020

Local News

“Absolutely I’m running again. It’s been so early that I really haven’t got out. My campaign committee’s been doing some things behind the scenes but I haven’t given out an official meeting but absolutely I’m running again,” Sheriff Tompkins says. “I love this job and I think I’m pretty good at it.”

Her first campaign featured ideas like integrity, credibility and working together, something she hangs her hat on.

“I think we’ve been hugely successful at that,” she said.

One success she’s proud of was solving the budget problems from previous administrations.

“Last year we gave the city back $550,000 as opposed to being over budget. I think we’re definitely on the right path,” she said.

Another accomplishment is decreasing the inmate population at the Muscogee County jail by letting a few inmates go.

“Just low-level misdemeanors or city ordinance violations, like drinking in public… After talking back and forth with judges. After so many hours in jail, if you can’t post a cash bond, you can be released on your own recognizance,” the sheriff said.

Those are just two accomplishment she’s especially proud of. Through her two years, she says the department has done pretty well.

“I think we got a 90, I really do, I think we’ve got an A. It takes a team and I think my team has been great,” she says.

So why should you for her again?

“I’m going to stand for integrity in this community. This is my full-time job, my full-time passion. I want to hear from you on what issues are important to you and how the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office can better serve you,” she smiled.

I think im pretty hard on myself..

I’ve spent my whole career here.. over 30 years. I’ve seen it from the bottom to the top
