Teens and adults with special needs enjoyed a night of dancing, food, and fun at the annual Opelika SHINE prom.
“I have a blast dancing and stuff,” says Dillion Smith.
Attendees pulled up to last night’s event in full prom tradition: limos, a red carpet, and the star treatment.
“They always had the opportunity to go to their own high school proms, but it was just never the same experience. Here they’re made to feel really special,” says Cassie Owens, a mother’ of one of the attendees.
Organizers say the free event was inspired by the Tim Tebow foundation’s “Night to Shine” events, where those with mental, physical, and emotional disabilities can come out to celebrate their individuality.
