High speed internet will soon be a reality for Sumter County businesses.
Following a three year feasibility study by One Sumter, the organization announced plans to offer gigabit fiber connectivity to local business was announced prior to a grounder breaking ceremony in Americus.
Along with local donors and business partnerships, a $2 million investment by Pineland Communications will expand the economic footprint of local businesses starting in 2019. Many area businesses have encountered issues for years over lack of high speed internet, often preventing them from necessary growth.
The plans for broadband services are currently for commercial use only, though residential services are expected to follow.
State Senator Greg Kirk told News 3 it is vital to get high speed internet to all families.
“You’ve got to get that internet to the last mile in all of Georgia, so that kids can study when they are at home.” Kirk added, “there’s so much that’s happening today on the internet, if you’re not able to connect or have a good connection, it really hinders you.”
