LEE COUNTY, Ala. — A Valley man is dead after the Lee County coroner says it appears he was struck by lightning.

Coroner Bill Harris tells News 3 the victim, 34-year-old Toby Burrow, was boating on Lake Harding with a group of friends when he was apparently hit by the strike late Friday night.

Harris says the group of four friends and Burrow were out on the lake near Lee Road 793 when they became caught in a storm. As they tried to rush back to shore, the lightning hit, injured Burrow and disabled the boat. Two people on board had to swim the boat back to shore while the remaining two tried to perform CPR on Burrow.

Burrow was rushed to East Alabama Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Coroner Harris asks for thoughts and prayers, adding this is the first lightning strike death he’s investigated in nearly three decades as a coroner.
