Third Congressional District candidate, Jesse Smith comes to Auburn

AUBURN, Ala.- Third Congressional District Democratic nominee, Jesse Smith came to Auburn Friday.

Smith is set to take on Republican incumbent, Mike Rogers on November 8.

Smith said he is trying to reach all 13 counties in the district every two to three weeks. He said he’s visited Jacksonville State, Talladega College and Tuskegee University so far, and folks at Auburn wanted him to come down and spend some time on the plains.

For Smith, a four-time combat veteran, this will be the second time he’s decided to run for congress. His last run came in 2014.

Smith said that he took it upon himself to continue serving his country in a supportive role in the community. For him, he did not get into politics for personal gain, but to address a need that the district has.

“The time for that need to be filled is now,” Smith said. “And, I think I can fill that need simply because I am willing to those things that the average politician is not willing to do. I’m willing to answer those tough questions. I’m willing to hold myself and have the citizens hold myself accountable for which we work on to move forward together.”

Smith added that in 2014 the lower 99% of the population, the hardworking people, senior citizens, veterans, college students and others did not have equal representation.

Smith is a advocate for raising the minimum-wage to $15 an hour, and believes it is time to put people to work by rebuilding the infrastructure and reducing college debt. Smith went on to say that if the $1.7 trillion student-loan debt is retired, it could create a lot of jobs.

He said he could not have made it where he is without the help of volunteers, his family, God and communities coming together fighting for a voice at the table.

Smith will be appearing at the The Hound in Downtown Auburn from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30.
