TROUP COUNTY, Ga (WRBL) — Troup County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a random shooting on Interstate 85 that sent one man to the Emergency Room. They are warning drivers to be vigilant and keep an eye out for anything suspicious. So far the shooting into a moving vehicle appears to be an isolated incident. It happened between mile marker seven and eight near the Kia Exit. Deputies will still be out in force, conducting extra patrols on the interstate.
Thursday morning, the victim told investigators he was the passenger in a car traveling Southbound on Interstate 85 when his window shattered, and he felt immediate pain to his left and right hands. Realizing he had been shot, they drove to the nearest hospital where he was treated for injuries, including a broken finger.
Investigators say this shooting does not appear to have been sparked by a road-rage incident. Instead, the victim and the driver were minding their own business when a shot was fired into their vehicle on the way to work.
Officials say the victims reported seeing a silver car to the right of them at the time of the shooting. However, because of the commotion they did not get a good look at the driver or the tag number.
Investigators say they found a small bullet fragment in the car and that it is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Investigations at 706-883-1616 or Crime Stoppers at 706-812-1000.
