In Troup County, 11 third grade students became sheriff’s deputies – for a day.
The Sheriff’s department and students were a celebrating the Troup County Junior Deputy program. The program is a partnership between the sheriff’s office and the school district.
Sgt. Stewart Smith teaches lessons at each elementary school throughout the year, and one student is selected from each school for this end of year celebration.
The lessons at each school are based on: school safety, safety at home, bicycle safety, and to say no to drugs and alcohol.
The Sheriff’s office truly enjoy’s this day and the opportunity to get to know the children in their community, but hope the Junior Deputy experience is one the kids remember. “This experience when they’re in third grade,” Sgt Smith says, “they might remember it, and it could be something they want to do one day.”
