Police were called to the Cooper Cove Apartments in the 4700 block of Milgen Road in the early morning hours after a report of shots fired.
The incident, which occurred around 2:25 a.m. resulted in the arrest of Jamichael Mays, 19 and Shaunbrecia Jennings, 21.
Mays and Jennings were reportedly “in an apartment upstairs with Jennings’ rifle,” according to the Columbus Police Department’s Captain Ronnie Hastings. “Jennings said that Mays was handling her new rifle when she heard the rifle go off, and then ‘everyone panicked.'”
From their investigation, police learned that Mays had been trying to “clear the rifle,” but it discharged instead, with shots going through the floor and into the apartment below.
Mays “wasn’t competent with the weapon he was handling,” said Hastings, and the rounds that left the rifle during the incident struck Mike Baxter in both his right and left legs, in his thighs.
During the investigation, police also found evidence of Mays and Jennings being in possession of marijuana (less than one ounce) and drug related objects.
Following the police investigation, Mays was charged with Reckless Conduct, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession and Use of Drug Related Objects. Jennings was charged with Possession of Marijuana and Possession and Use of Drug Related Objects.
Both individuals have been released from Muscogee County Jail since their arrests.
“This happens more than you’d expect,” said Hastings about the weapons discharge. “It doesn’t happen every day, but it happens more often than people would think. It’s usually in homes, not businesses. Unfortunately this time someone got hurt.”
