Youth voice concerns to elected officials

Local News

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Youth in our community are sharing their voices with elected officials.  YStep, the NAACP Youth Council and Urban League joined together Thursday night for a forum allowing the youth to share their concerns.

City Councilor Walker Garrett and Muscogee County Marshal Greg Countryman made up the panel.  It was the first time 14-year-old Maekala McCoy had ever attended a forum like this.

“I think it would be a great experience to prepare us for other speaking jobs we might have to do and it’s also a really great experience to let us know that we actually matter in the community and our voice will be heard,” she said.

McCoy says she’s concerned about schools not having enough funding.  Other topics discussed include the crime rate and after-school programs.
