Man faces charges after allegedly trying to run over deputy

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A 42-year-old Bessemer man shot after he tried to run over a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy is now formally charged.

The Birmingham News reports authorities Wednesday filed attempted murder and assault charges against Jeffery McCay. He remains hospitalized with a shoulder wound.

Chief Deputy Randy Christian says a deputy was on patrol Saturday when she saw a car in the wrong lane and heading directly for her cruiser.

Christian says the deputy moved out of the way and turned around to make a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop.

Christian says McCay stopped later because of a flat tire. As the deputy approach, he put the car in reverse, knocking the deputy to the ground. He says a second deputy fired shots at McCay. After another short chase, McCay stop and was arrested.
