Marine Band musicians offer masterclasses to Columbus students

COLUMBUS, Ga- Music students in Columbus are receiving the opportunity of a lifetime. Following a concert at the RiverCenter, members of the “President’s Own Marine Band” held masterclasses for the public.

Students learned to strike the right chords in music and hit high notes in life.

“As a musician, when you’re inside of an ensemble and you’re playing, and you get the goose bumps, and you’re like ‘I love this moment,’ and you’re fully involved, something inside of you just knows, you’ve got to take the chance,” says Ben Allen.

And 19 year old Ben Allen took the chance.  He changed his major, packed his bags, and headed to Columbus to pursue a music degree at Columbus State University. Allen got one step closer to his dream by participating in a master class in the French horn.

“Her energy, her spontaneity, and her excitement, I know I want a teacher in my next step. Being with her and having that experience, it’s pointing me in the right direction,” says Allen.

Cecilia Kozlowski was Ben’s instructor.  She’s played the French horn in the Marine Band for the past three years.  She has a passion for inspiring future musicians.

“You cannot be emotional about the results of auditions. Just because somebody says no to you does not mean you’re not worthy of the position, does not mean you’re not good enough,” says Kozlowski.

Next door, class was led by Steven Temme He’s played saxophone in the Marine Band for 14 years.

“To engage different parts of the country with a lot of students, it’s super fun,” says Temme.

Temme offered tips to CSU senior music education major Jared Cummings who says the feedback was invaluable.

“To hear him talking about his audition process and what he was hearing in our excerpts when we were playing them, it was enlightening for sure,” says Cummings.

Saxophonist Joseph Girard, the visiting lecturer of music at CSU says evenings like this one inspire students.

“Especially when they have the opportunity to hear the group, or hear the artist play, they get very excited afterwards. We have wonderful students here at Columbus State University,” says Dr. Girard.
