Veterans find friendship 70 years after fighting on the same battlefield

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Military members young and old are coming together just ahead of Veterans Day Friday. For two WWII veterans, the day after the election is both a time to reflect and a time to embrace the future.

More than 20 current soldiers visited veterans Wednesday at the Covenant Woods Retirement Community in Columbus. The veterans served from WWII through the Korean conflict, and even in the Vietnam War.

“It wasn’t easy,” Charlie Maupin said. “It wasn’t easy at all.”

Maupin is a retired corporal, who describes his time in the U.S. armed forces during WWII as nothing short of a miracle. Now, he’s passing along the lessons he’s learned in combat to the next generation.

“I’m very impressed with their discipline, their courtesy, and the respect they feel for us old veterans,” Maupin said.

Army Specialist Courtney Peters says her visit to vets inspires her to achieve her goals.

“Just seeing their stories and knowing what they went through, I know there’s a possibility I could go through similar issues like that too,” Peters said.

Peters plans to go into business after completing her service in the military. She wants to help run a retirement home with her mom and sister, both nurses.

Air Force Ret. Sgt. Jim Wooters remembers seeing plenty of action during WWII.

“Some of them had arms missing, legs missing, arms hanging on. It was an awful sight,” Wooters said.

Wooters and Maupin were once separated by about two miles on the beaches of Normandy over 70 years ago on D-Day. Now, the two live right down the hall from each other. They have built an undeniable bond sharing war stories, personal experiences, and advice for updating their Facebook pages.

“I think any of us that went through it were thankful and have a little different appreciation of the country,” Wooters said.”

When asked about his response to Republican Donald Trump winning the 2016 presidential election, Wooters chuckled, expecting that there will be a lot of change in the future.
