COLUMBUS, Ga — A Muscogee County Sheriff’s deputy now has a broken leg after he was hit by a car Thursday night.

Deputy Richard Gribbins was off-duty and helping direct traffic around a wreck near Exit 12 on I-185 when one of the cars involved in the crash left the scene – and hit Gribbins in the process.

He will now have to go into surgery for his broken leg. Sheriff John Darr says Gribbins was a brand new recruit and was set to graduate from the training academy Friday.

The car is described as a dark colored four door sedan made between the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.

If anyone had any information on the car or its driver, please call the sheriff’s office at 706-653-4225.
