Judge finds Dylann Roof competent to stand trial in Charleston church shooting


CHARLESTON, S.C. — Dylann Roof has been found competent to stand trial in the killing of nine black worshippers at a South Carolina church.

U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel announced the decision Friday, CBS News reports.

As News 3 reported, Roof, a white man, stands accused of shooting six black women and three black men during a bible study session at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina late Wednesday, June 17, 2015. Police have said they are treating the case as a hate crime.

Jury selection has been scheduled to start on Monday.

Prosecutors have said they plan to seek the death penalty for Roof.This is a developing story. Stay with News 3 for updates.
