FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Sixth graders in Cumberland County are writing about Hurricane Matthew as part of their teacher’s plans to help them deal with their emotions.
One student writes a tree might have sliced his home in half if another tree hadn’t blocked it.
Another says a tree crashed into the family’s kitchen — five minutes after they escaped.
One young girl says she and her family lost everything in the storm.
“And all her stuff was flooding out of her door and she had just ignored it and she went back to sleep,” says flood victim Nikiara McKinnon. “When she woke back up, the water was rising to her bed so she couldn’t save any more of her stuff.”
Teachers say they hope having the students write about what happened will give them closure on their loss.
