OAKLAND, Calif. (CBS News) – A bake sale in the East Bay is serving up a political message along with its sweet treats.

At Laney College women are marking equal pay day with an unequal bake sale. Men pay full price. Women get a discount to highlight the average gender wage gap.

Women are getting an unfair slice of the pie, so today men will pay an unequal share for a cookie.

The American Association of University Women, set up shop on Laney College, hoping to raise awareness of the staggering statistics.

“Today is equal pay day it marks the day on average women have to work to into this year to get as much as a man did the previous year,” says Barbara Norum.

Full time working women in American on average make about 80 percent of what men earn, for women of color the numbers are worse. African American women earn 63 cents and Latina women: 54 cents, for every dollar a man takes home.

“I think that’s is absurd…how people can get paid the same job and get paid less it is not right,” Adrena Williams.

This year equal pay day comes the same week Federal appeals court in San Francisco ruled that women can’t be paid less than men based on past wages.

“That old fashioned idea that there needs to be a living wage for a man to provide for his family…it’s antiquated. Im a single parent and i need to get paid just as much as any man in the workforce,” says Susan Campbell.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement, “Congress must finally pass the Paycheck Fairness Act to strengthen and close loopholes in the 1963 Equal Pay Act and give women the tools they need to ensure they are paid fairly and equally to their male counterparts.”

But the gap is starting to close, slightly, shrinking a percentage point from 2015 still according to the American Association of University Women at this pace, women will have to wait 100 years to make the same pay as men.
