Northside softball wins 4th straight region championship

Northside won its 4th straight region title by run ruling Cairo 12-2 at home on Thursday. In the bottom of the first inning with runners on 2nd and 3rd, Jada Chadwick roped a two-out, two-RBI double to score Madison Cosgrove and Kaitlyn Carson to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead.

The game remained 2-0 until Cairo's Taylor Faircloth launched a two-run homerun in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game 2-2.

The Patriots responded in the bottom half of the fourth when Emily Holmes smacked a two-out, two-RBI double to score Sammie Cotton and Kennedi Bedell to put Northside back in front 4-2. The Pats added two more runs to take a 6-2 lead after four innings.

Several different Northside players contributed in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Northside a 10-2 lead. Starting pitcher Ireland Cavanaugh came to bat with runners at 2nd and 3rd and cranked a single to the gap in left center scoring two more runs to complete the 12-2 run rule and give the defending state champions their 4th straight region title.

"To win a region championship and to have a birthday is a great day," head coach Brandon Jenkins said. "One of the best birthdays I've had in a long time so really excited. You know these seniors have never not won a region championship so it just lets us know that all the hard work and dedication that they've put in over the last four years has paid off."

One of those seniors includes Emily Holmes who had four RBI's in the win.

"It just feels good to know that our class is the class that really brought it through and we started it and it's not going to end here with our class," Holmes said.
