WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Ash Carter says U.S. forces have killed a senior Islamic State leader known as Haji Iman, marking a further erosion of top leadership in the militant group in Syria and Iraq.

Carter and Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made the announcement Friday at a news conference at the Pentagon.

Carter said the Islamic State leader was well-known within its ranks, and that his death will hinder the network’s operations in Iraq and Syria.

Carter said he knows that IS leaders are often replaced.
