When Phil was in high school, he loved listening to legendary broadcaster Paul Harvey. That experience along with taking a speech class in high school steered him toward a career in broadcasting.
Phil broke into the business right after graduating from the University of Georgia in 1974 with a B.A. degree in Journalism. He spent two years as sports director for WRFC radio, the flagship station for Georgia football and basketball.
In 1976 he joined WRBL-TV in Columbus as a sports anchor. Phil took a 16-year break from broadcasting from 1982-1998 to work in marketing and public relations at Callaway Gardens and to launch his own video production company.
In 1998 he rejoined WRBL as a news anchor where he has been ever since. Phil’s broadcasting career in Columbus has spanned portions of five decades. He and his co-anchor, Teresa Whitaker, have spent more years together on the anchor desk than any other anchor team in Columbus TV history.
Phil and his wife, Judy, have raised their three children in Columbus. He is thankful all three still live in the fountain city. That means he has instant access to all eight of his grandchildren!
Phil’s hometown is La Fayette, Georgia.
