TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A man is dead after authorities say he collapsed as officers sprayed him with pepper spray while he was in custody.

The incident happened Friday night in Tuscaloosa. Police say they got a call that Anthony Ware, who was wanted on a warrant, was sitting on the front porch of an apartment armed with a gun. When officers arrived on the scene, they say Ware quickly got up and ran into the woods.

Authorities caught up with Ware, 35, and say he resisted arrest twice after being pepper sprayed. Officers were able to handcuff him, but witnesses say there are conflicting reports.

“While walking out of the woods, Mr. Ware started having trouble breathing and then collapsed. Officers immediately called for rescue to respond and began CPR,” Assistant Chief Ronnie Dunn with Tuscaloosa PD said.

Some witnesses are dubious of police reports, saying they played a big part in Ware’s death.

“I think they had a lot to do with his death, I think the police had a lot to do with it because his head was swole,” one witness said.

Authorities say the six officers involved in Ware’s case will remain on duty during an investigation. Investigators will be looking at dash camera footage to get a better picture of what happened. That video will be released to the public at a later date.
