COLUMBUS, Ga. – Starting now, you will start to see an increasing number of activities going on in Columbus through the summer months, aimed at bringing in more visitors to the city.
Whitewater Express is open year round, but right now they’re gearing up for their busiest time of the year.
The Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau says they see an increase of events like family and military reunions, sporting events, and Whitewater during the spring and summer months. Dan Gilbert with Whitewater Express says the number of visitors they bring in increases each year. He says Whitewater guests booked more than 3300 hotel rooms last year.
“That’s a major impact and of course everybody that wants to come into town wants to go out to eat. They all go out for lunch or go out for dinner so we therefore are really helpful to the restaurants and it’s a great partnership.” Said Dan Gilbert.
The Visitors Bureau says during the last fiscal year, Columbus had 1.9 million visitors who had a $340 million impact on the local economy. They say without travel and tourism the city would have to increase taxes per household by $500 in order to make up for the loss of revenue.
Last year, Whitewater Express had more than 40-thousand guests and this year they’re expecting 50 to 60,000.
A popular event, Uptown’s Spring Concert Series, kicks off Friday, April 1.
