COLUMBUS, Ga — A Veterans Memorial Middle School student has been suspended and faces charges after making threats to “shoot up” the school.
Columbus Police Major J.D. Hawk says the student made repeated comments and jokes about planning a shooting before the principal suspended him Friday afternoon.
Hawk says an off-duty police officer working at Northside High School was contacted by Veterans Memorial’s principal about the incident. Hawk says an investigation began Monday.
He says the student was charged with making terroristic threats Monday afternoon according to the department’s “Zero Tolerance” policy.
“This young man could have ruined his or someone else’s life,” Hawk says. “We take every situation seriously and no threat is taken lightly.”
Since the suspect is a minor, he will face charges in a juvenile court.
