Suspect in custody after brief standoff on 32nd Street

UPDATE:

3:00 P.M. — Police confirm a suspect is in custody after a brief standoff Tuesday afternoon.

A News 3 reporter on the scene says SWAT and bomb squad responded to the scene on 32nd Street shortly after 2 p.m. It appears law enforcement succeeded in cornering a suspect in the earlier homicide shooting on 4th Avenue.

Coroner Buddy Bryan confirms the identity of the victim as 33-year-old Tamir Harris

The police department says it is too early in the investigation to release the suspect’s name.

1:00 P.M. — All of 4th Avenue is now blocked off as a Muscogee County Coroner’s Office vehicle has arrived on the scene of an early Tuesday morning shooting.

News 3’s Justin Holbrock is on the scene where a heavy police presence remains in the area.

COLUMBUS, Ga. — A News 3 reporter is live on the scene where Columbus police have blocked off a large part of 4th Avenue Tuesday morning.

Police say a shooting in the area prompted a heavy law enforcement response. Major Gil Slouchick confirms homicide detectives are on their way to the scene.

The shooting scene is only two streets away from Fox Elementary School. Parents tell News 3 they received a call from the school notifying them there would be a temporary lockdown.This is a developing story. Stay with WRBL News 3 for updates.
