LEE COUNTY, Ala. — The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a man was found dead with strange marks on neck Tuesday afternoon.
Around 3:45 p.m. Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a residence located in the 400 block of Lee Road 237 in Smiths Station. The caller stated that they were with a male subject who had suffered some type injury and might be deceased.
54-year-old Ricky Brooks was found unresponsive inside his home with a ligature mark around his neck. Initial investigation of the scene by investigators has revealed signs of a struggle.
Further investigation found that Brooks’ vehicle was missing from the home, but it was later recovered by Phenix City Police. That vehicle is now with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office where it is being processed for evidence.
Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said they do not have a suspect or suspects at this time, and the motive is unknown. He did tell News Three that they do not believe it was a robbery, and that the individual (s) knew Brooks.
“Some of the evidence we have indicates that may be the case,” Sheriff Jones said. “As far as danger to the general public, I wouldn’t say that’s an elevated issue at this point and time. However, we do have an individual out there somewhere that committed a murder and certainly, that’s a concern.”
Brooks’ cousin, Nathan said that Brooks was very active in his church, community and frequently fed the homeless. Brooks said that he will miss his cousin’s warm smile and his giving nature.
“I really don’t know what would make someone do something like that to my cousin,” Brooks said. “He is a good person. He didn’t bother anyone. He always stayed to himself. He wasn’t in a crowd unless he was helping in the community.”
