Athletes Of The Week: Shaw Raiders

Columbus, GA – The Shaw Raiders went into last week’s big game against Hardaway as underdogs. The Raiders hung tough and walked away with a hard fought 30-28 region win over the Hawks.

“We felt accomplished but we also knew that’s what we could have done all year. We worked for it and we worked hard, so that’s we expect to get the job done,” said Shaw quarterback Andrew Lacy.

“We knew that we could win the game. We just had to execute. Coach put us ina great position for the plays he called for us to win the game,” said Shaw sophomore Derrick Kelley.

“A lot of teams underestimated us because of our previous years but this year we’re something different. We’re coming out ready to fight, ready to hit and that’s who we are,” said Shaw sophomore running back Amir Harper.

In a pressure packed moment at the end of the game Jose Daza nailed the game winning field goal.

“Well I had a lot pressure on my mind but when I kicked it like I didn’t think about it. When I knew I made it,  I fell on my knees and thanked God,” said Daza

Head coach Al Pellegrino was pleased with the way his team played.

“I feel like we grew up a lot during the process of that game. Because the old Shaw High School would have quit when the adversity hit us and this group hasn’t done that yet.” said Pellegrino.

Head coach Pellegrino expects this kind of win to propel the Raiders to the next level.

“We just expect them to grow off of this and to build off of it. To use it as a building block so we can continue to get better each week,” said Pellegrino
