The Tri-City Striders track club did extremely well recently in a national AAU competition in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The Striders have been strutting their stuff recently particularly on the track.
And all of the young runners held their own in Louisiana.
A total of 11 runners ages 5 to 18 brought home a total of 30 medals.
They were led by Monica McNeil who outraced a competitive field of 85 other runners to win the 800 meter run, the 1600 meter and she also placed second in the 400 meter and the high jump.
“The secret: hard work and training every day. You have got to be dedicated, make the comittment and stick to it,” McNeil said.
Striders head coach Spivey Green says he was extremely proud of the way his team performed.
“As far as their accomplishment without getting the big head myself, we are proud, just like a dad would be if your son went out there and shot the two points at the buzzer, I felt that same way when our track team went out there and performed. We had little or no practice to be perfectly honest with you. We have been running since the 19th of December, but without the same combination of kids we took down to Baton Rouge. So, I was extremely proud of them and the parent support group that went with us down. I could not have done it by myself,” Green said.
And so it gives us great pleasure to honor the Tri-City Striders, our WRBL Athletes of the Week.
