Frustration grows between Lumpkin City Manager and City Council

Lumpkin, Ga-  “What God has for me is for me, so regardless of the forces on the council, when God speaks, everyone best listen,” says Lumpkin City Manager Shirley Walker.

Walker believes she could be better supported by members of the City Council and the community. But she has a heart for Lumpkin and is ready to serve despite not having the full support of select council members.

“The community voted the council members, the council appointed me. It’s gonna take all of us working together. It’s gonna take a collective effort…two, three, four, five, six people should not be able to make the entire decisions for an entire city,” says Walker.

Like the decision to fire the former city clerk last month, in a closed door meeting that did not include Walker as outlined in the city’s charter.

“The employee was supposed to report to me,” says Walker. “I feel like I was left out of the process. I should have had some intake on the termination of the clerk. That was the second or third time that I’ve been excluded as a participant of those meetings.”

Sharron Latimer has lived in Lumpkin for 59 years and when asked about the effectiveness of the current council she said…

“Something needs to be did about…some investigation needs to be taken place in Stewart County in the city of Lumpkin, Georgia,” says Latimer.

While Walker didn’t deny her frustration, she remains hopeful.

“Well going forward, I’m gonna try to work with the city council and in turn, I hope they can work with me,” says Walker.

News 3 requested interviews with several City Council members at tonight’s meeting, but those we approached declined. The City Council did agree to interview two candidates over the next week to fill the open city clerk position. Walker adds she’s hoping to be a part of that decision.
