Northern launches four home runs to win District 8 Championship

Columbus -- The Northern little league baseball team is heading to the state tournament after beating American 10-0 in the District 8 Championship on Friday.

Northern faced elimination five days in a row and won all five including two against American. On Thursday, Northern beat American 2-1 to force a second game.

Ty Jones, who hit the go-ahead two-run home run on Thursday, started the scoring for Northern in the title game with a two-RBI double in the first inning.

Northern added three more runs in the second inning thanks to a pair of home runs from Drew Ashton and Brantley French.

Starting pitcher Jake Landson struck out the side in the third inning giving him seven strikeouts through three innings. He finished the game with eight K's allowing only one hit and zero runs.

Ashton continued his birthday celebration by smashing his second two-run home run of the game to put Northern up 7-0.

Akhil Gutta sealed the win by cranking a three-run home run to right center to give Northern the walk-off 10-0 win. This was the second game in three days in which Northern hit four home runs in one game.

Northern head coach Randy Morris led the team to the Little League World Series in 2006 and 2010 and won the championship in 2006. The state tournament in Smyrna, Georgia starts July 14.
