Before-and-after photo shows severity of flooding on Big Island

Torrential rain has caused the Wailuku River to overflow on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Kyla Defore shared this before and after photo of the Wailuku River. She said she took the photo on the left a few months ago and the one the right she took on Thursday.

It shows a swollen river from the heavy rain Hurricane Lane has brought to the Big Island of Hawaii.

More rain is expected as Hurricane Lane is moving at a slow 6 mph.

The Wailuku river is the longest river on Hawaii’s Big Island. Its course lies mostly along the divide between the lava flows of Mauna Kea and those of Mauna Loa to the south. In the Hawaiian language, the river’s name roughly translates to “river of destruction.”

Aleysa Martin captured this video of how a flash flood swept through a road near Wailuku River.
