NWS: 19 of 23 victims of Lee County tornadoes lived in mobile homes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WIAT) – The National Weather Service in Birmingham released a report Thursday detailing the types of structures destroyed by the tornadoes that devastated Lee County Sunday, March 3.

According to the report 19 of the 23 victims killed lived in mobile or manufactured structure housing. Kevin Laws is a Science Officer with the National Weather Service in Birmingham. Laws says all tornadoes pose a significant threat to mobile and manufactured homes.

“No matter what type of tornado it’s going to be, weak, strong, or violent, you’re going to have to seek substantial shelter,” said Laws, “Those homes, mobile homes, manufactured homes are not safe in those situations.”

Laws says there is not much time to seek shelter once a tornado touches down in your area. he says it is essential to have a plan in place after learning about the potential of severe weather in the days leading up to the storms.

“We’re all promoting this information days in advance. So if you’re informed about severe weather, many days in advance, it allows you plan,” said Laws, “You know when it’s going to occur, and you’re able to make those plans with you and your family so you’re able to stay safe.”

Laws says your county emergency management agency is a great source if you need help creating a severe weather plan, and if you do not know where to go for shelter.

“No matter where you live in this state you need to reach out to your community leaders. Especially folks like the emergency management. Let them help you,” said Laws, “If you move to this state and your new, and you don’t understand this process, they can help you. If you’ve lived here your whole life, they can help you.”

Laws says you also need to have a way of being alerted of severe weather in your area.
