If April showers bring May flowers, how do we explain everything that’s already in bloom?
On average, Columbus gets the most rain in March. (April ranks 9th as far as average monthly rainfall).
So a better saying for us would be March showers brings April flowers.
March is also when temperatures warm up – which plays an even bigger role than rainfall when it comes to spring blossoms.
The old saying originated from a 1610 English poem. For a cooler climate like England, warmer temperatures arrive closer to April rather than March…so the phrase is more accurate for them.
For warmer climates…like in Georgia and Alabama, Spring flowers bloom earlier.
Although flowers started blooming in March, there are still more to come through May – particularly tulips, peonies and iris!
