Why do stars twinkle?

Weather Questions with Cody Nickel

Stars really do look like shining diamonds in the sky and it’s all due to Earth atmosphere!

Our atmosphere extends upward for hundreds miles and is made of layers of varying density and temperature.

As the light from stars enters our atmosphere, it refracts or bends in different directions as it goes through those layers.

This condition is called scintillation and explains why our stars appear to twinkle!
